Ontario homeowners replacing or upgrading HVAC equipment in 2025 have access to an unprecedented stack of federal, provincial, and utility rebates. When combined correctly, these programs can offset $5,000 to $10,000 or more of the cost of a qualifying heat pump installation. Most homeowners claim only one or two of the available programs. Here is how to capture all of them.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides up to $5,000 for qualifying energy-efficient retrofits, including air-source heat pumps. The process requires a pre-retrofit and post-retrofit EnerGuide home energy assessment (about $400, partially reimbursed), followed by applying for the grant through the NRCan portal. Processing time is 6 to 12 weeks after the post-retrofit assessment. Applications must be initiated before the retrofit work begins.
Ontario homeowners currently heating with heating oil can receive up to $10,000 through the Canada Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program when switching to a cold-climate heat pump. Incomes below $70,000 (household) may qualify for the maximum amount. This program has income thresholds but is significantly more generous than the standard Greener Homes Grant for eligible households.
Most programs can be stacked (claimed simultaneously) on the same installation. A typical combined claim for a qualifying Ontario heat pump installation might include the Canada Greener Homes Grant ($5,000), the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus ($2,500), and a local utility rebate ($500 to $1,000). Total: $8,000 to $8,500 in rebates on a $6,000 to $10,000 installation.
