How to Maximize Every Ontario HVAC Rebate Available in 2025

October 7, 2025·6 min read·Fortify Canada

Ontario homeowners replacing or upgrading HVAC equipment in 2025 have access to an unprecedented stack of federal, provincial, and utility rebates. When combined correctly, these programs can offset $5,000 to $10,000 or more of the cost of a qualifying heat pump installation. Most homeowners claim only one or two of the available programs. Here is how to capture all of them.

Federal: Canada Greener Homes Grant

The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides up to $5,000 for qualifying energy-efficient retrofits, including air-source heat pumps. The process requires a pre-retrofit and post-retrofit EnerGuide home energy assessment (about $400, partially reimbursed), followed by applying for the grant through the NRCan portal. Processing time is 6 to 12 weeks after the post-retrofit assessment. Applications must be initiated before the retrofit work begins.

Federal: Canada Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program

Ontario homeowners currently heating with heating oil can receive up to $10,000 through the Canada Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program when switching to a cold-climate heat pump. Incomes below $70,000 (household) may qualify for the maximum amount. This program has income thresholds but is significantly more generous than the standard Greener Homes Grant for eligible households.

Ontario and Utility Rebates

  • Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate Plus: Up to $5,000 for heat pumps replacing gas heating, requires an EnerGuide assessment
  • Hydro One: Up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pump installations in Hydro One service territory
  • Toronto Hydro: Up to $1,000 for heat pumps in Toronto Hydro territory, combined with Enbridge programs
  • Peel Region, York Region, and others: Some municipalities offer additional top-up rebates. Check your local utility's website.

Rebate Stacking: How to Claim Multiple Programs

Most programs can be stacked (claimed simultaneously) on the same installation. A typical combined claim for a qualifying Ontario heat pump installation might include the Canada Greener Homes Grant ($5,000), the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus ($2,500), and a local utility rebate ($500 to $1,000). Total: $8,000 to $8,500 in rebates on a $6,000 to $10,000 installation.

Application Timing Tips

  • Initiate the Greener Homes application before the equipment is installed, not after. This is a hard requirement.
  • Choose a contractor who is familiar with the rebate documentation requirements. Missing paperwork is the most common reason claims are rejected.
  • Keep all original receipts, invoices, and product specification sheets with EnerGuide ratings clearly noted.
  • Submit applications immediately after the post-retrofit assessment. Programs have funding limits and close when oversubscribed.
  • Allow 8 to 16 weeks for rebate processing. The rebate is not immediate at installation.
