Ductless mini-split heat pumps have become one of the fastest-growing HVAC categories in Ontario. They heat and cool without ductwork, operate at exceptional efficiency, and qualify for provincial and federal rebates. But they're not the right fit for every situation.
A mini-split consists of an outdoor compressor and one or more indoor air handlers, connected by a small conduit through a 3-inch wall penetration. No ductwork is needed. The same system heats in winter and cools in summer.
Standard mini-splits lose efficiency below -10°C. For Ontario winters, you must specify a cold-climate model rated for -25°C to -30°C, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Bosch IDS 2.0, or Daikin Aurora. Choosing the wrong model for Ontario's climate is the #1 installation mistake.
A single-zone system costs $2,800 to $4,500 installed. Multi-zone systems (one outdoor unit powering 2 to 4 indoor handlers) run $5,500 to $10,000+ depending on zones and installation complexity. Available rebates of up to $7,100 apply for fuel-switching scenarios.
